A collaborative work by Scott Harris, WEArts, and other artists from Colorado's western slope.
‘The Afterlife’ is an interactive coliseum shaped structure consisting of 12 tunnels alternating with 12 slides. Each tunnel represents a pathway through death and ultimately leads to eternity. Once in eternity, you have a choice: to stay in eternity forever, or to be reborn under one of 12 zodiac signs.
Outwardly, there will be a large, 24 sided, semi round enclosed area, surrounded by 12 tunnels and 12 slides. The alternating tunnels and slides will face out in all directions, and the tunnels will be labeled with a large sign above: DEATH. The outer appearance will be unfinished wood and framing and will have no other decor, aside from some painted arrows, etc leading into the death tunnels. The tunnels and slides will be the only access to the inner space of eternity.
Upon closer examination, there will be sound effects in each tunnel, depicting various forms of demise…Each tunnel will have its own ‘theme’. Once someone has walked/crawled down the forced perspective of the death tunnel, they will arrive in a brightly lit circle, which will be “The Afterlife” Once inside, there is a central NON-denominational altar. Rising up out of the center is a rotating lit sign that reads ETERNITY. The altar will be a collage of consumerism and everyday life objects, all painted Gold. Currently the overall concept and message of the central altar is still being designed.
The inner space will have the central altar, and soft religious/chanting/spiritual music. The inside of the outer walls will be painted with blue sky and puffy cloud shapes. Surrounding the space will be 12 individual ladders, which take you to the top of the slides back to the outer world. Each ladder will go to a small archway that will have a zodiac sign above, so that participants can choose their new sign of birth, before being reborn back into Burning Man.
I believe that all humans, to some degree, contemplate life and death. Most people hold beliefs of an afterlife, reincarnation, or some sort of idea of what may happen after you die. While the answer cannot be known, this project looks to give viewers a chance to engage with the concept in real time, and to be able to share and interact with one overall concept or version of this mystery of life, while sharing and relating thoughts and beliefs with others. - S Harris
WEarts and CampV are excited to invite local artists to apply to retreat to V and participate in a residency that will allow time and space to create.
Artists will receive lodging in a two-bedroom cabin, cross promotion and space to create in an inspiring location.
CampV’s mission began with art specifically in mind. In 2020, Founders Bruce and Jodie Wright and Natalie Binder reimagined a 120 acre former mining community into a gathering place where artists, entrepreneurs, and all seekers of human flourishing could gather to inspire and educate one another. Through art, lectures, gatherings, and partnerships, the goal is to provide a space where all participants can have their lives enriched and their horizons broadened.
Artists must be willing to do the following during their residency:
Offer a community class or showing at completion of their time
Leave a creative element behind at CampV
At least three social posts per week from CampV
Applicants should be respectful of guests and self-guided.
Stay Tuned for our next round!
